China's higher-education landscape is shaped by two overlapping quality tiers: the legacy Project 985 / Project 211 lists (39 and 116 elite universities respectively) and the current Double First-Class (双一流) initiative, which designates universities and individual disciplines for state investment. Institutions like Peking University, Tsinghua, Fudan, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong appear on all lists and rank alongside the world's best in engineering and natural sciences.
The degree ladder follows a conventional pattern:
- Bachelor's (本科, 4 years) — most programmes are taught in Mandarin; science and engineering tracks are especially strong.
- Master's (硕士, 2–3 years) — both academic (thesis) and professional routes available.
- PhD (博士, 3–4 years) — often funded via supervisor grants or government scholarships.
The number of English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes has grown sharply: over 1,000 full degrees are now listed on campuschina.org, concentrated in engineering, business, medicine, and public policy. For Chinese-taught programmes, most universities require HSK Level 4 (bachelor's) or HSK Level 5 (postgraduate). Even students enrolled in English programmes benefit from reaching HSK 3–4 for daily life and networking.
About the country for students
China combines ancient culture with one of the world's fastest-developing innovation ecosystems. Campus life at major universities is self-contained — dormitories, canteens, sports facilities, and libraries are all on site, and costs are significantly lower than in Western destinations. A shared dormitory typically costs ¥800–2,000/month; a private off-campus apartment in a major city runs ¥2,000–5,000/month.
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend for several thousand international students per year — worth researching early, as competition is high. Provincial and university-level scholarships add further options.
Practical notes: a VPN is needed for many foreign websites; the WeChat and Alipay ecosystems handle almost all daily payments; and registering with the local police within 24 hours of each new address is legally required.
Best cities to live as a student
Beijing and Shanghai offer the broadest academic choice and the strongest international networks, but living costs are the highest in China. Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Wuhan deliver excellent universities at roughly half the cost and are increasingly well-connected by high-speed rail. All five cities have large international student communities and English-friendly services around campus.
Student visas
Secure your university's admission notice and JW201 / JW202 form before applying for a visa — both documents are issued by the university and verified by the CSCSE. X1 holders must register with the Public Security Bureau within 30 days of arrival and convert the entry visa to a Residence Permit for Students, which is renewed each academic year. Keep your passport, residence permit, and accommodation registration certificate with you; spot checks do occur. Exiting and re-entering China on an expired residence permit is not permitted, so track renewal deadlines carefully.

Shanghai
Fudan and Tongji anchor a cosmopolitan city with the largest concentration of English-taught programmes, strong finance and tech internship markets.
Hangzhou
Zhejiang University (consistently top-3 nationally) plus Alibaba's home city — a liveable, scenic tech hub with lower costs than Shanghai.
Nanjing
Multiple Double First-Class universities (Nanjing University, Southeast University) in a historically rich, student-friendly city with affordable living.
Wuhan
One of China's largest student populations; Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology offer strong STEM programmes at low cost.
