Preparation
Update your CV to one or two pages with your most recent experience at the top
Write a versatile cover letter template you can tailor per application in under 20 minutes
Set up or update your LinkedIn profile with a professional photo and current headline
Ask two referees in advance whether they are happy to provide a reference
Check your university's careers portal for exclusive internship listings
Finding opportunities
Search company graduate and internship portals directly, not only job aggregators
Attend at least one careers fair per semester and bring printed CVs
Reach out to alumni in roles you are targeting for a 20-minute informational call
Set up job alert emails on LinkedIn, Indeed and any sector-specific boards
Note each company's application opening and closing dates in a tracker spreadsheet
Applying
Tailor your CV and cover letter to each role by mirroring key words from the job description
Research the company's recent news, products and values before submitting
Complete any online assessments (numerical, verbal, situational judgement) promptly after applying
Send a brief follow-up email to the recruiter if you have not heard back within two weeks
Keep a log of every application with company, role, date applied and current status
Preparing for interviews
Prepare the STAR method answers for at least five common competency questions
Research the industry and the company's competitors so you can discuss the market
Prepare three thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer
Test your video call setup (camera, microphone, background) the day before a remote interview
Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours of each interview
