Know your income
List every income source with exact amounts and payment dates (loan, grant, part-time job, family support)
Note which payments are termly and which are monthly so you can spread termly sums correctly
Check whether your student loan or grant requires you to re-apply each year
Identify any unclaimed scholarships, bursaries or hardship funds at your institution
Map your fixed costs
Add up rent plus any fixed utility or internet charges not included in rent
Note tuition fee instalments and their exact due dates
Include transport passes or estimated weekly travel costs
List any subscription services you pay for and cancel unused ones
Factor in contents insurance and, if required, renters insurance
Control variable spending
Set a weekly cash limit for groceries and stick to a shopping list
Cook at least four meals at home per week to limit eating-out costs
Use student discount cards (NUS, UNiDAYS, Student Beans) for every eligible purchase
Track every expense for at least one month using a free budgeting app
Review your spending at the end of each month and adjust the next month's limits
Build a financial buffer
Transfer a small fixed amount to a separate savings account on each payday
Build an emergency fund covering at least one month's essential costs
Avoid buy-now-pay-later services for non-essential purchases
Contact your student support office early if you run into financial difficulty
