Education & graduate system

Australia operates a nationally regulated higher education system overseen by TEQSA. Institutions must be CRICOS-registered to enrol international students, and every course on the register is covered by the ESOS Act — a consumer-protection framework that guarantees course delivery and fee refund rights.

The degree ladder:

• Bachelor's (3 years) — the standard undergraduate degree; some professional programs (medicine, law, dentistry) are 4–6 years.
• Honours (1 year) — added research year that strengthens entry into a PhD.
• Graduate Certificate / Graduate Diploma (6–12 months) — professional upskilling, no thesis.
• Master's (1–2 years) — coursework or research; research masters feeds into a PhD.
• PhD (3–4 years) — fully supervised research; fees are often waived and stipends available for domestic-equivalent candidates.

About the country for students

Australia offers a high-quality, English-speaking environment with strong student support obligations built into law. Student visa holders can work legally during their studies, and the subclass 485 Graduate visa provides meaningful post-study work time to gain local experience before applying for skilled migration.

Healthcare is covered for most students through the mandatory OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) insurance, which must be purchased before the visa is granted. Cost of living is significant — Sydney and Melbourne are among the world's most expensive cities — but regional cities like Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane offer a considerably better affordability ratio. Expect AUD 21,000–30,000 per year for living expenses depending on city.

English proficiency proof (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced) is required by virtually all institutions. Minimum scores vary; research-track programs tend to require higher thresholds than coursework.

Melbourne and Sydney dominate by sheer volume of universities and graduate employers, but the cost-of-living gap versus Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra is substantial. The Australian government actively incentivises regional study — students who complete at least two years at a regional institution qualify for an additional year of post-study work rights under the subclass 485. Canberra and Adelaide both qualify as regional for this purpose, making them strategically attractive beyond their lower rents.

Student visas

Apply for the subclass 500 only after receiving a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your institution. The application is entirely online through the ImmiAccount portal; most applicants receive a decision within four weeks. You must maintain satisfactory course progress (usually 50 % pass rate per study period) and attendance to keep your visa conditions.

After graduation, the subclass 485 is the key pathway to work experience. Lodge within six months of receiving your final results. The standard post-study work stream grants two years for a bachelor's or master's by coursework, three years for a master's by research or a bachelor's with honours, and four years for a PhD — with the regional-study bonus adding one additional year for each tier. Many graduates use this window to transition to an employer-sponsored or skilled-migration visa.
