Effective Literature Research
How to search, evaluate, and organise academic sources so your research is thorough and your citations are solid.
Good research is not about finding the most sources — it is about finding the right ones and knowing what they actually say. Here is a reliable process from first search to organised notes.
1. Use academic databases, not just Google
The open web returns results optimised for clicks, not academic quality. For serious research, start with databases that index peer-reviewed content:

Most universities give free access to Scopus and Web of Science via your student login. Use it — these databases have quality filters the open web lacks.
2. Build your search query systematically
A single keyword search misses most relevant literature. Build your query from:
- Core concepts — the two or three central ideas in your topic.
- Synonyms — authors use different terms for the same thing ("adolescents" vs. "teenagers" vs. "youth").
- Boolean operators — AND narrows, OR broadens, NOT excludes. Example:
(social media OR Instagram) AND mental health AND adolescents NOT Facebook.
Start broad, check the result count, then tighten. Fewer than 20 results usually means the query is too narrow; more than 2,000 means it is too broad.
3. Evaluate sources before you read them fully
You cannot read everything. Use a quick triage to decide what deserves full attention:
- Title and abstract — is the paper actually about your question?
- Year — for fast-moving fields, prefer sources from the last five to ten years; seminal older papers are exceptions.
- Journal or publisher — peer-reviewed journals are the baseline standard. Check if the journal is indexed in Scopus or Web of Science; avoid "predatory" journals with no real peer review.
- Citation count — a paper cited 400 times is likely influential; one cited twice may be, but needs more scrutiny.
Tip: a high citation count does not mean a paper is right — it means it is important. Sometimes the important thing is to know that a widely-cited paper has since been contested or retracted.
4. Follow citations forward and backward
Once you find a useful paper, mine it in two directions:
- Backward — read its reference list. The sources it cites are the foundational literature.
- Forward — search for papers that have cited this one (Google Scholar shows this as "Cited by X"). These are the most recent work in the same thread.
This "snowball" technique is often faster and more targeted than running new keyword searches.
5. Organise as you go with a reference manager
A reference manager is non-negotiable for any serious research task. Zotero (free, open-source) and Mendeley (free) both:
- Import references with one click from most databases.
- Store PDFs alongside metadata.
- Generate citations and bibliographies in any style automatically.
- Let you add notes and tags to each source.
Build your library as you research, not after. Retroactively reconstructing citations from memory is painful and error-prone.
6. Take notes that are ready to use
For each source, record: the full citation, the main argument in your own words, any specific data or quotes you might use (with page numbers), and which section of your paper it will feed. Notes written this way are essentially a first draft — you can pull them directly into your outline.
